Afternoon: Exploring the Lagoon: San Giorgio, Murano and Burano
Venice lies in the centre of a vast lagoon that stretches for about 30 miles from north to south, studded by numerous small islands, mostly deserted. This amazing environment is what drove the Venetians to establish their city here, a perfectly secure and inaccessible little world…Enjoy the beauty of a ride across the waters of the lagoon and visit 3 of the most important little islands situated in the northern section of the lagoon. We could start from san Giorgio Maggiore, a tiny island across Piazza San Marco. This island is still the house of a Benedectine monastery and from the top of their church belltower you can enjoy the best panoramic view over the city and the whole lagoon. About half an hour away is Murano, where you can enjoy a demonstration of glass blowing in a local furnace. And to conclude our excursion, Burano, a quaint and colourful fisherman island famous for its lace and charming architecture….

DAY TWO
Morning: St. Mark’s Square, the Ducal Palace and St. Mark’s Church
We start our tour with a brief walk through backstreets so as to understand the structure of the city and learn about its origins and its history. Soon we reach Piazza San Marco. This extraordinary square was designed to house the political centre of Venice. It was also the social heart of the city, the piazza where all great events where hosted. Here you find the most impressive buildings in Venice. Start off your visit with the Ducal Palace, the old government building, still preserving its magnificent décor. The palace, constructed in the 14th C, was the forge of all political decisions that made Venice grand and powerful. Adjacent is the magnificent Church dedicated to Saint Mark the Evangelist: admire the nearly 90,000 square feet golden mosaics and precious oriental marbles that drape the exterior and the interior of this truly Byzantine monument: there is no church like it!
