Tuscan Coast
Beautiful beaches abound on Tuscany's west coast, in the area of northern Tuscany called Versilia. Here you will find clean water and interesting villages set against a background of the Apuan Alps, famous for their marble production. Among the attractions of Versilia: At Marina di Carrara, you can tour the quarries and marble museum, as well as enjoy a sandy beach lying between pine trees and the water. Forte dei Marmi is one of the world's top ten topless beaches.
The summer festival at Torre di Lago Puccini presents opera, concerts and dance in an open-air theater by the lake. Viareggio, the largest beach town in Tuscany, has long been known for its carnival, seaside restaurants, summer nightlife and shopping.
Further south of Versilia and Pisa is the port of Livorno, where cruise ships often dock. Called "Leghorn" by the British, Livorno not only lent its name to a variety of chicken, it also has an historic Venice district, with a dense network of canals and bridges. Just outside Livorno, is the Bolgheri winemaking zone, home of the famous Super Tuscan wines.
